Chula Vida

This is our favorite restaurant on the beach. It is located on the beach road towards Barra de Potosi and is a very nice place. The food is great and the drinks are great. The owners are Jorge and Lisette. They are extremely nice people. The Ceasar Salad is excellent. There are not too many places to get a good salad around here. The baked fish fillet with pesto or nuts is very good. One of our other favorites is a seared sesame tuna appetizer with wasabi. Ask for Spanish Coffee, it is a treat.

Fresh seafood and very close. This is an enramada (covered area on the beach) and is located right next door. Walk out to the beach and head to your left about 50 yards. It is usually open for lunch and dinner. You can arrange breakfast ahead of time if you talk to Angel. A new thing we have tried that is currently not on the menu is Enchiladas (Red -- Rojo or Green -- Verde). These can be ordered with shrimp or chicken and are very good.

La Condesa

This is an enramada in Barra de Potosi. Barra de Potosi is a little town about 3 miles down the beach. To the right when leaving the the condo. La Condesa is the enramada on the far right side. Remember enramada is a covered place on the beach. Make sure you park in their area. Fresh seafood and cold refreshments are their specialty. The grilled fish is amazing. Ask for Robalo (Snook) or Huachinango (Red Snapper). It is ordered by the kilo. They also have a great shrimp salad not on the menu called "Shrimp Enramada". Desert is something to look forward to. they come around with fried bananas. They serve breakfast too. Huevos Rancheros and Chilaquiles are two of our favorites. Get the glaze and cinnamon too. This is a nice place to hang out. They have hammocks and the bay is good to swim too. You can stay as long as you order.

Enramada Nayito

Right next door to La Condesa. This is also very good. Camaronillas are very good. These are crispy shrimp tacos. Margaritas are also good.

Barra de Potosi Night Restaurants

There are a few small places that open up in the evening in Barra de Potosi. They are located along the first main road into the town. These are very small and you need to speak a little spanish to figure out what to order. They serve food that the locals eat and are not expensive. The food is fresh and great. Beer and soft drinks are available and you can bring your own drinks if you like.

Los Braseros

This is one of our must go to places in downtown Zihuatanejo. This is the real taco experience. Our favorite is Alambre. They start with this vertical roasted meat that they trim off the outer cooked part to begin the grilling process. They add a bunch of vegetable and the result is to die for! We have tried to recreated it back home in the states but it is not the same.

Very nice gourmet dining overlooking Madera Beach and Zihuatanejo Bay. Located on the road to Playa la Ropa, this is a great place to eat and "very romantic". (755-554-8446)

Il Mare

If you get tired of Mexican food you can get "real" Italian food at Il Mare. Very nice romantic place on the road to Playa La Ropa. It overlooks Zihuatanejo bay and Madera Beach. The pasta with Italian Sausage is fabulous. (755-554-9067)

Villa de la Selva

Enjoy spectacular sunsets and fine dining in this very romantic restaurant in a former Mexican President's cliff side villa overlooking the bay in Ixtapa. Great food fabulous view. (755-553-0462)

Sunday Evening is Zihuatanejo

Every Sunday evening at the basketball court on the water front in Zihuatanejo there is a party. The town gathers to watch some sort of performance and there is food and fun. The food is served from carts and is very good. The favorite seems to be "Puffy Tacos". These have filling of your choice and are fried until they puff up. There are normal tacos and tamales also. They are all quite good. A must is a lady that sells Flan from a tricycle cart. This is great stuff. They usually start up around 5-6. A great place to get a good local Mexican experience.

The airport is called Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo International Airport. The airport code is ZIH. There are flights available from many airports in the US and Mexico. Some of the airlines that fly to Zihuatanejo are:

  • Alaska (West Coast, LAX)
  • US Air (West Coast, through Phoenix)
  • Continental (Through Houston)
  • American (Through Dallas)
  • United (Through Denver)

It is easy to get a taxi from the airport or in town. Getting them to come out to the condo is also possible. Let them know you are at "Condominium Playa Blanca". "Villas Playa Blanca" are next door. Make sure you ask the taxi driver for a card and see if he will come and get you at the condo if you call.

Rental Car

We no longer recommend Hertz. There have been numerous problems with bogus credit card charges after renting from them. We now use Alamo which is also at the airport. You can reserve cars on the Alamo internet site. The Airport code is ZIH. Make sure you check the car closely for scratches and dings. Also, look at the glass for cracks. You may not get the car you reserve, but we have always gotten a car, unlike some of the other rental places.

Good Links

El Refugio De Potosí is a wild life and plant refuge just down the road towards Barra de Potosi. This is highly recommended if you enjoy seeing animals and native plants.
